Downtown Manhattan Walking Tour 3 Hour
The 3-hour walking and subway tour covers the Financial District including Wall Street and the World Trade Center, SoHo, Little Italy and Chinatown. These are neighborhoods that simply can’t be fully appreciated from a bus. There will be one or two opportunities to sample tasty treats.
Visit the Financial District – The tour begins in the Financial District as we take in Wall Street, the New York Stock Exchange and the World Trade Center and learn about the historic New Amsterdam, the original Dutch Colony. We will also visit the historic Trinity Church and St. Paul’s Chapel. We will visit the Financial District in City Hall Park, where we will see City Hall, World Trade Center 1 (the Freedom Tower), Woolworth Building and the Brooklyn Bridge. Click here for our 2 hour tour of Lower Manhattan, which runs on select days of the week. You may also be interested in reading about the things to see in Lower Manhattan.
Visit Chinatown – From the Financial District we will jump on the subway northbound into Chinatown. Your tour guide will continue with your mass transit tutorial. Chinatown is the largest and only growing immigrant stronghold in all of Manhattan. We start off by bringing you to Columbus Park, the heart of the Cantonese speaking community and the former center of the Five Points neighborhood (of Gangs of New York fame) and discuss the history of the many different immigrant groups who have resided there. Read more about the things you will see in Chinatown and take a look at our Chinatown Food Tour.
Visit Little Italy – In the snap of a finger, Chinatown makes way to Little Italy. Once a very sizable neighborhood of Italian immigrants, Little Italy is indeed very little today. While many of its Italian inhabitants have moved on, its character as an Italian enclave lives on with many specialty shops and museums. You will learn how this neighborhood, like many in Manhattan, has transformed from an immigrant tenement district to a more trendy neighborhood. Check out our post on things to see in Manhattan’s Little Italy.
Visit SoHo – Once the ‘Times Square’ and industrial center of Manhattan, SoHo, the neighborhood ‘south of Houston Street’ fell on hard times. It would become attractive to starving artist, who were attracted to the large windows and floor plans of the former factory floors. The artists’ influences can still be felt today. We will spend considerable time in the Historic Cast Iron District, where many of the city’s earliest ‘skyscrapers’ stand. Cast-iron technology made it possible for building owners to expand their floor space by eliminating large masonry walls and allowed for a great variety of building facades. This way even building owners of modest means were able to build impressive facades that resembled those of more expensive stone. You will get the opportunity to peek into some of SoHo’s impressive art galleries and boutique clothing stores. Read more on the things to see in SoHo.
